Exploring STEM and Sustainable Energy: A Recap of the Summer VET Academy in Slovakia

Technical University of Kosice 2024

From June 10th to 21st, 2024, twenty girls from secondary schools had a unique opportunity to delve into the exciting world of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The focus of this immersive experience was sustainable energy and green buildings. The Summer VET Academy took place in Slovakia at the Faculty of Civil Engineering TUKE, organized through a collaborative partnership of educational institutions, associations, chambers, and industry.

Our institution designed a comprehensive program that seamlessly integrated theoretical knowledge with practical activities. This approach ensured a well-rounded and stimulating learning experience for our future colleagues. During the academy, we introduced the girls to the SECOVE project and emphasized the main theme: “Green and Blue Infrastructures for a Sustainable Future.”

Over the course of two weeks, the participants had the privilege of hearing real-life stories from “junior ambassadors of the day.” These ambassadors shared their personal histories, motivations, successes, and areas of interest. Additionally, senior ambassadors—renowned professors in the field—discussed critical topics such as climate change, human activities, pollution, waste management, sustainable water and energy practices, environmental building certification, and flood hazards.

The academy also provided hands-on experiences. Participants visited our state-of-the-art laboratories and embarked on special excursions related to renewable energy sources, wooden buildings, and even explored the greenest administrative building. Working collaboratively, the girls engaged in team activities and tackled two-week projects focused on applying green architectural elements to both interior and exterior spaces. At the culmination of the academy, students presented their exceptionally creative and innovative ideas. We, along with our partners, recognized their efforts and celebrated their contributions to a more sustainable future.
